Method

Preparation of Potatoes

  1. 1

    Peel and Chop Potatoes

Peel the potatoes and chop them into uniform pieces, about 1 to 2 inches in size for even cooking.

  2. 2

    Boil the Potatoes

Place the chopped potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add 1 tsp of salt to the water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat and let simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender, approximately 15-20 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain the Potatoes

Once the potatoes are tender, drain them in a colander and let them sit for a minute to allow excess moisture to evaporate.

Mashing Process

  1. 4

    Add Ingredients

In the same pot, add the drained potatoes back in. Add in the butter, milk, remaining salt, and pepper. If using garlic, add the minced garlic at this stage.

  2. 5

    Mash the Potatoes

Using a potato masher or a fork, mash the potatoes until they reach your desired consistency, whether smooth or slightly chunky.

  3. 6

    Adjust Seasoning

Taste the mashed potatoes and adjust the seasoning if necessary. If you prefer horseradish, mix in the horseradish at this stage.
