Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the basmati rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water. Rinse until the water runs clear to remove excess starch, which prevents the rice from becoming gummy.

  2. 2

    Soak the Rice

Transfer the rinsed rice to a bowl and cover it with enough water. Let it soak for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour. This will help the rice to cook evenly and become fluffy.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Drain and Measure Water

After soaking, drain the rice using the fine-mesh strainer. In a medium saucepan, add 2 cups of fresh water for every cup of basmati rice. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of butter or oil to the water.

  2. 4

    Boil the Water

Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat.

  3. 5

    Add the Rice

Once the water is boiling, add the drained basmati rice to the pot. Stir gently to separate the grains.

  4. 6

    Cover and Simmer

Cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid and reduce the heat to low. Let the rice simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until all the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.

  5. 7

    Fluff and Serve

Once cooked, turn off the heat and let the rice sit covered for 5 minutes. Then, use a fork to fluff the rice gently before serving.
