Wash the fresh okra and slice them into 1/2 inch pieces.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, salt, and black pepper. In another bowl, beat the egg with water.

  3. 3

    Coat the Okra

Dip the okra pieces into the egg mixture, then coat them with the cornmeal-flour mixture.

  4. 4

    Fry the Okra

Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the okra in batches until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

Onion Rings

  1. 5

    Prepare the Onions

Peel the onions and slice them into 1/2 inch thick rings.

  2. 6

    Make the Batter

In a bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. In another bowl, whisk the egg and milk together.

  3. 7

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the egg-milk mixture, then coat with the flour-cornmeal mixture.

  4. 8

    Fry the Onion Rings

Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot. Fry the onion rings in batches until golden brown, about 3-5 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

Loaded Fries

    Cook the Fries

Prepare the frozen french fries according to package instructions until crispy.

  2. 10
