Crispy Onion Strings
Method
Preparation Steps
- 1
Prepare the Onions
Peel the onions and slice them thinly into rings. Soak the onion rings in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes to tenderize and flavor them.
- 2
Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
- 3
Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 4
Coat the Onion Rings
Remove the onion rings from the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off. Dredge them in the flour mixture, ensuring they are well coated.
- 5
Fry the Onion Rings
Carefully place the coated onion rings in the hot oil, frying them in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and drain on paper towels.
- 6
Melt the Cheese
While the onion strings are still hot, sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top of the onion strings. You can also place them under a broiler for a minute to melt the cheese evenly.
- 7
Serve
Serve the crispy onion strings warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
