Onion Straws

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into thin rings, about 1/4 inch thick. Separate the rings and set them aside.

  2. 2

    Soak in Buttermilk

Place the sliced onion rings in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Ensure all the rings are submerged. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes to tenderize and flavor the onions.

Batter Preparation

  1. 3

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Whisk together until well mixed.

  2. 4

    Prepare the Batter

After the onions have soaked, remove them from the buttermilk, allowing excess liquid to drip off. Dredge the onion rings in the dry mixture, ensuring they are evenly coated. Shake off any excess batter.

Frying

  1. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to maintain the temperature.

  2. 6

    Fry the Onion Straws

Carefully drop the battered onion rings into the hot oil in small batches. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  3. 7

    Serve

Once all the onion straws are fried, serve them hot as a delicious appetizer or snack. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce!
