Preparation and Baking

  1. 1

    Caramelize the Onions

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, for about 25-30 minutes, or until the onions are caramelized and golden brown. Add the thyme during the last 5 minutes of cooking. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Filling

In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, eggs, and half of the Gruyère cheese. Stir until well blended. Then, gently fold in the caramelized onions until evenly distributed.

  3. 3

    Fill the Tartlet Shells

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place tartlet shells on a baking sheet. Spoon the onion and cheese mixture into each shell, filling them about ¾ full. Sprinkle the remaining Gruyère cheese on top of each tartlet.

  4. 4

    Bake the Tartlets

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the tartlets are golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.
