Method

Caramel Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Caramel

In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and water over medium heat. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves.

  2. 2

Once the sugar is dissolved, stop stirring and allow the mixture to boil until it turns a golden caramel color, about 8-10 minutes.

  3. 3

Immediately pour the caramel into a round flan mold or individual ramekins, swirling to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.

Custard Preparation

  1. 4

    Prepare the Custard Mixture

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and vanilla extract until well combined.

  2. 5

Carefully pour the custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the flan mold or ramekins.

Baking

  1. 6

    Bake the Flan

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a water bath by placing the flan mold or ramekins in a larger baking dish and filling the dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the mold.

  2. 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

  3. 8

Remove from the oven and let it cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Serving

  1. 9

    Serve the Flan

To serve, run a knife around the edge of the flan to loosen it. Invert onto a serving plate, allowing the caramel to drizzle over the top. Cut into slices and enjoy!
