French Onion Soup Ingredients

Method

Cooking Directions

  1. 1

    Caramelize the Onions

In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 30-40 minutes until the onions are deep golden brown and caramelized.

  2. 2

    Deglaze the Pot

Add the dry white wine to the pot, scraping the bottom to release any browned bits. Allow the wine to reduce for about 5 minutes.

  3. 3

    Add Stock and Seasonings

Pour in the beef bone stock and add the thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and let it cook for about 20 minutes.

  4. 4

    Prepare Garlic Croutons

While the soup simmers, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice the baguette into thick slices, brush with olive oil, and sprinkle with minced garlic. Bake for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.

  5. 5

    Serve the Soup

Ladle the hot soup into bowls, top with a slice of baguette, and sprinkle generously with provolone cheese. Place under the broiler for 2-3 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
