Custard
Caramel
Method
Caramel Preparation
- 1
Make the Caramel
In a small saucepan, combine 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon of water. Heat over medium heat, stirring gently until the sugar dissolves.
- 2
Cook the Caramel
Continue to cook without stirring until the mixture turns a golden amber color. This should take about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat immediately to prevent burning.
- 3
Coat the Flan Mold
Quickly pour the caramel into a flan mold or individual ramekins, swirling to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.
Custard Preparation
- 4
- 5
Pour the Custard into Mold
Carefully pour the blended custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the flan mold.
Baking
- 6
Prepare the Water Bath
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the flan mold in a larger baking dish and fill the baking dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold.
- 7
Bake the Flan
Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- 8
Cool and Refrigerate
Remove the flan from the oven and let it cool at room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight before serving.
Serving
- 9
Unmold the Flan
To serve, run a knife around the edge of the flan to loosen it. Invert onto a serving plate, allowing the caramel to flow over the custard.
- 10
Slice and Enjoy
Slice the flan into wedges and enjoy your classic caramel custard dessert!
