Method

Mug Creation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Clay

In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of ceramic clay with 0.5 cups of water. Mix thoroughly until a smooth, pliable dough forms.

  2. 2

    Shape the Mug

Take a portion of the clay dough and roll it into a ball. Using your hands or a pottery wheel, shape the ball into a cylindrical form to create the mug body. Ensure the walls are even and thick enough to withstand firing.

  3. 3

    Add the Handle

Roll out another piece of clay into a long, thin strip to form the handle. Attach it securely to the side of the mug by scoring the attachment points with a knife and using a bit of water to help bond.

  4. 4

    Dry the Mug

Allow the shaped mug to dry completely for 24 hours or until it is bone dry before firing.

  5. 5

    Fire the Mug

Place the dried mug in a kiln and fire it according to clay manufacturer's instructions, typically at a temperature of 1830°F (1000°C) for bisque firing.

  6. 6

    Apply Glazes

Once cooled, apply 1 cup of pink glaze to the exterior and 1 cup of white glaze to the interior of the mug using a brush.

  7. 7

    Fire Again

Fire the mug again in the kiln at a higher temperature of 2232°F (1222°C) to set the glazes.

Decoration Process

  1. 8

    Add Underglaze

Once the mug is cooled after the second firing, use black underglaze paint to hand-paint or draw the cat designs onto the mug. Be creative with the placement!

  2. 9

    Apply Floral Decals

Select 10 floral decals and carefully apply them to the mug's surface, pressing down to ensure they adhere well.

  3. 10

    Final Glaze

Once the decals are applied, cover the entire mug with 1 cup of clear glaze to protect the designs and give a glossy finish.

  4. 11

    Final Firing

Fire the mug one last time in the kiln according to the clear glaze's instructions to ensure everything is set properly.
