Method
Cottage Stoneware Preparation
- 1
Mix the Clay
In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of stoneware clay with 1 tablespoon of natural pigments to achieve your desired color. Slowly add water until the mixture is moldable.
- 2
Knead the Clay
Knead the clay mixture on a clean surface for about 5 minutes until it's smooth and pliable. This will help remove any air bubbles.
Sculpting and Assembly
- 3
Shape the Snails
Using a pottery wheel or hand sculpting tools, form the kneaded clay into snail shapes. Make sure to leave an opening at the top of each snail for dispensing salt and pepper.
- 4
Create Holes
Once the snail shapes are complete, use a small tool to poke holes in the top of each for salt and pepper dispensing. Ensure the holes are evenly spaced and not too large.
- 5
Drying
Allow the sculpted snails to dry for 24 hours or until they are firm to the touch.
- 6
Firing in Kiln
Place the dried snail shapes in a kiln and fire them according to your kiln’s specifications, typically at a temperature of 1,800°F (982°C) for stoneware.
Finishing Touches
- 7
Glaze the Snails
Once fired, remove the snails from the kiln and apply pottery glaze using a paintbrush. This will give them a glossy finish and help seal the clay.
- 8
Final Firing
Fire the glazed snails in the kiln again for a final time according to the glaze instructions, typically at a lower temperature.
- 9
Apply Sealant
After the final firing and cooling, if desired, apply a food-safe sealant for extra protection and longevity.
