Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Begin by washing the Russet potatoes thoroughly under cold running water to remove any dirt. Peel the potatoes using a vegetable peeler, then cut them into quarters for easier cooking.

  2. 2

    Cook the Potatoes

Place the peeled and quartered potatoes in a large pot and fill it with enough water to cover the potatoes. Add a pinch of salt to the water. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and let the potatoes simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until fork-tender.

  3. 3

    Mash the Potatoes

Once cooked, drain the water and let the potatoes cool for a few minutes. In a large mixing bowl, mash the potatoes until smooth using a potato masher or fork. Allow the mashed potatoes to cool completely.

  4. 4

    Mix the Ingredients

To the cooled mashed potatoes, add salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, flour, and the egg. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined and form a dough-like consistency.

  5. 5

    Shape the Tater Tots

Using your hands, take small portions of the potato mixture and roll them into small cylindrical shapes resembling tater tots. Place the shaped tater tots on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  6. 6

    Heat the Oil

In a large frying pan or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small piece of the mixture; if it sizzles, the oil is ready.

  7. 7

    Fry the Tater Tots

Carefully place a few tater tots into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them for about 3-4 minutes or until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides. Use a slotted spoon to remove the tater tots and drain them on paper towels.

  8. 8

    Serve

Once all the tater tots are fried, serve them hot with your favorite dipping sauces or enjoy them as they are!
