Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the long-grain white rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold water. Rinse until the water runs clear to remove excess starch, which can make the rice gummy.

  2. 2

    Measure Water

In a large pot, measure out 8 cups of water. This will be used for steaming the rice.

  3. 3

    Add Salt

Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the water in the pot and stir to dissolve.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Combine Rice and Water

Once rinsed, add the rice to the pot with the salted water. Stir gently to combine.

  2. 5

    Bring to a Boil

Place the pot over medium-high heat and bring the water to a rapid boil. This should take about 10-15 minutes.

  3. 6

    Reduce Heat and Cover

Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer for 18-20 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time.

  4. 7

    Fluff the Rice

After 20 minutes, turn off the heat and let the rice sit, covered, for an additional 10 minutes. Then, remove the lid and use a fork to fluff the rice gently.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve Hot

Transfer the steamed rice to a large serving bowl. Serve hot as a side dish or as a base for your favorite main dishes.
