Cake Components

Chocolate Ganache

Chocolate Shavings (for garnish)

Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

  5. 5

    Add Boiling Water

Stir in the boiling water until the batter is well combined. The batter will be thin.

  6. 6

    Bake the Cake

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Cakes

Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Chocolate Ganache Preparation

  1. 8

    Heat the Cream

In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer.

  2. 9

    Melt the Chocolate

Remove the pan from heat and add the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Stir until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth.

  3. 10

    Cool the Ganache

Let the ganache cool at room temperature until it thickens slightly, about 10-15 minutes.

Assemble the Cake

  1. 11

    Layer the Cakes

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of ganache on top.

  2. 12

    Add the Second Layer

Place the second cake layer on top and pour the remaining ganache over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides.

  3. 13

    Garnish

Using a vegetable peeler, shave dark chocolate over the top of the ganache for garnish.
