Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Condensed Milk

Open the can of sweetened condensed milk carefully using a can opener. Pour the contents into a medium-sized saucepan.

Cooking

  1. 2

    Heat the Milk

Place the saucepan over low heat. Stir the milk continuously using a wooden spoon or a spatula to prevent it from sticking to the bottom.

  2. 3

    Cook Until Thickened

Continue to cook and stir for about 1 to 1.5 hours. The mixture will gradually change color, turning a caramel brown. Keep stirring to avoid burning.

  3. 4

    Add Vanilla (Optional)

If using, add the vanilla extract during the last 5 minutes of cooking and stir well.

Cooling

  1. 5

    Cool the Dulce de Leche

Once thickened to your desired consistency, remove the saucepan from heat. Allow it to cool for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a clean jar or container.

  2. 6

    Store

Let the dulce de leche cool completely before sealing the jar. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
