Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the saucepan

Take a medium-sized heavy-bottom saucepan and place it on the stove. Ensure that it is clean and dry.

  2. 2

    Add sweetened condensed milk

Open the can of sweetened condensed milk and pour it into the saucepan.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Heat the milk

Turn the heat to medium-low and allow the sweetened condensed milk to begin heating. Stir occasionally to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pan.

  2. 4

    Simmer and stir

Once the milk starts to bubble gently, reduce the heat to low. Continue to stir constantly, scraping the sides of the pan to incorporate any milk solids back into the mixture.

  3. 5

    Cook until thickened

Cook the mixture for about 30-40 minutes, or until it turns a deep golden brown color and thickens to your desired consistency. Be patient and avoid increasing the heat to prevent burning.

Finishing Touches

  1. 6

    Add optional ingredients

If desired, remove the saucepan from heat and stir in vanilla extract and a pinch of sea salt for enhanced flavor.

  2. 7

    Cool and store

Allow the dulce de leche to cool slightly before transferring it to a clean, sterilized jar. Let it cool completely at room temperature before sealing.
