Method

Caramel Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Caramel

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the granulated sugar and water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves completely.

  2. 2

    Cook the Caramel

Once dissolved, stop stirring and allow the mixture to boil until it turns a deep amber color, about 8-10 minutes. Keep a close eye to prevent burning.

  3. 3

    Pour the Caramel

Quickly pour the caramel into a round baking dish or individual ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.

Custard Preparation

  1. 4

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Blend the Custard Ingredients

In a blender, combine the whole milk, sweetened condensed milk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Blend until smooth and well combined.

  3. 6

Pour the Custard into Caramelized Dish

Carefully pour the custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the baking dish or ramekins.

  4. 7

    Prepare for Baking

Place the baking dish or ramekins in a larger baking pan. Add hot water to the larger pan until it reaches halfway up the sides of the custard dish (this is a water bath).

  5. 8

    Bake the Flan

Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the flan is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.

  6. 9

    Cool the Flan

Remove the flan from the water bath and let it cool at room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Serving

  1. 10

    Unmold the Flan

To serve, run a knife along the edges of the flan to loosen it. Invert onto a serving plate, allowing the caramel to flow over the top.

  2. 11

    Slice and Enjoy

Slice into wedges and serve chilled. Enjoy your delicious traditional Mexican flan!
