Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

In a fine mesh strainer, rinse the long-grain white rice under cold running water until the water runs clear. This will help remove excess starch and prevent the rice from becoming sticky.

  2. 2

    Chop the Vegetables

Chop the onion and mince the garlic. Set aside for later use.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Sauté the Aromatics

In a medium saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 4-5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  2. 4

    Add Spices

Stir in the cumin, paprika, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Cook for 1 minute, stirring frequently to toast the spices.

  3. 5

    Cook the Rice

Add the rinsed rice to the saucepan and stir to coat the rice with the spices and oil. Pour in the vegetable broth and bring the mixture to a boil.

  4. 6

    Simmer

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.

  5. 7

    Add Beans

After the rice is done cooking, gently fold in the canned black beans (drained and rinsed) into the rice mixture. Allow to heat through for another 5 minutes.

  6. 8

    Garnish and Serve

Remove from heat and fluff the rice and beans with a fork. Stir in the chopped cilantro, adjust seasoning if necessary, and serve warm.
