Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Peeling and Chopping Potatoes

Peel the Russet potatoes and chop them into evenly sized chunks, about 1-2 inches each, to ensure they cook evenly.

  2. 2

    Cooking Potatoes

Place the chopped potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add 1 tsp of salt to the water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer and cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

Mashing

  1. 3

    Draining the Potatoes

Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them using a colander and allow them to sit for a minute to release excess steam.

  2. 4

    Mashing the Potatoes

Return the drained potatoes to the pot. Add 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter, 1 cup of milk, and 1 cup of sour cream. Use a potato masher or a hand mixer to mash the potatoes until they reach your desired consistency.

Seasoning

  1. 5

    Adding Flavor

Add 1 tsp of black pepper and 1 tsp of garlic powder to the mashed potatoes. Mix well to combine. Adjust seasoning to taste, adding more salt, pepper, or garlic powder as desired.

  2. 6

    Garnishing

If desired, sprinkle 2 tablespoons of chopped chives on top of the mashed potatoes for added flavor and presentation.
