Method

Meatballs

  1. 1

    Prepare the meatball mixture

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, egg, chopped parsley, salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning. Mix until well combined.

  2. 2

    Form the meatballs

Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1-2 inches in diameter, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  3. 3

    Bake the meatballs

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake the meatballs for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are cooked through and browned.

Sauce

  1. 4

    Sauté the onions and garlic

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 4-5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute.

  2. 5

    Prepare the sauce

Add the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir to combine and let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

  3. 6

    Add fresh basil

Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving. Remove from heat once combined.

Assembly

  1. 7

    Assemble the subs

Slice the sub rolls in half lengthwise. Place 2-3 meatballs in each roll and spoon the sauce over the meatballs.

  2. 8

    Add cheese and bake

Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese generously over the meatballs in each sub. Place the assembled subs on a baking sheet and return to the oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  3. 9

    Serve

Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and serve hot. Enjoy your Italian meatball subs!
