Caramel

Flan Mixture

Method

Caramel Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Caramel

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the granulated sugar and water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves.

  2. 2

    Caramelize

Allow the mixture to cook without stirring until it turns a deep amber color. This should take about 8-10 minutes. Be careful not to burn it.

  3. 3

    Pour Caramel

Quickly pour the hot caramel into a round flan mold or individual ramekins, swirling to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.

Flan Mixture Preparation

  1. 4

    Blend Ingredients

In a blender, combine the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Blend until smooth and well combined.

  2. 5

    Pour Mixture into Mold

Carefully pour the flan mixture over the set caramel in the mold or ramekins.

  3. 6

    Prepare for Baking

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the flan mold or ramekins in a larger baking dish. Fill the baking dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold.

  4. 7

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the flan is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

  5. 8

    Cool and Chill

Remove the flan from the oven and let it cool in the water bath for about 10 minutes. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

  6. 9

    Serve

To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan, invert onto a plate, and gently lift off the mold. Enjoy your traditional caramel flan!
