Onion Mixture

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Thinly slice the yellow onions and set aside.

  2. 2

    Cook the Onions

In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, and sugar. Cook for about 30-40 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.

  3. 3

    Add Wine and Seasonings

Once the onions are caramelized, add the thyme, black pepper, and dry white wine. Cook for an additional 10 minutes until the wine is reduced and the mixture is thickened.

Baking

  1. 4

    Prepare the Bread

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the French bread into thick slices and place them on a baking sheet.

  2. 5

    Assemble the Dish

Spoon the caramelized onion mixture generously over each slice of bread. Top with gruyere and parmesan cheese.

  3. 6

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
