Method

Prepare Flavor Blend

  1. 1

    Combine concentrated flavors

In a small bowl or measuring cup, combine the cherry syrup (or grenadine), vanilla extract, almond extract, blackberry syrup (if using), orange zest, and caramel syrup. Stir thoroughly until homogeneous. This creates a small concentrated flavor blend that approximates the complex fruit and spice notes of Dr. Pepper.

  2. 2

Taste the blend on its own (a tiny smear on a spoon) and adjust: add a drop more almond extract if you want a nuttier note, more vanilla for creaminess, or an extra 1/4 tsp cherry syrup if you want stronger cherry presence.

Assemble Soda

  1. 3

Fill a tall glass with ice (about 1 cup). Chilling the glass first helps keep carbonation longer.

  2. 4

Pour the cola into the glass first (1/2 cup). This gives body and color to the drink.

  3. 5

Add the prepared flavor blend over the cola. Stir gently once to incorporate without flattening the soda.

  4. 6

Slowly add the carbonated water (1 1/2 cups) to the glass by pouring down the side to preserve fizz. Stir very gently once or twice to mix flavors while keeping carbonation.

  5. 7

Add the fresh lime juice (1 tsp) and lemon juice (1/2 tsp). Give one very gentle stir to combine.

Finish & Serve

  1. 8

Garnish with a maraschino or fresh dark cherry and a thin orange slice or twist on the rim. If desired, gently rub the orange peel around the glass rim for an aromatic lift.

  2. 9

Taste and adjust sweetness or depth: if the drink needs more sweetness or caramel note, add up to 1/2 tsp more caramel syrup; for more cherry, add 1/2 tsp cherry syrup. Stir gently after any adjustment.

  3. 10

Serve immediately while fizzy. Stir lightly before drinking if it has sat for a few minutes to recombine flavors.
