Cold Brew Concentrate
To Serve (optional)
Method
Cold Brew Concentrate
- 1
Combine coffee and water
In a clean 1.5–2 quart (or liter) pitcher or jar, add 1 cup coarsely ground coffee. Pour 4 cups cold, filtered water over the grounds, starting in the center and working outward to ensure all grounds are saturated.
- 2
Stir to bloom
Using a long spoon or spatula, gently stir the grounds and water for 10–20 seconds so all grounds are wetted and no dry clumps remain.
- 3
Steep
Cover the jar or pitcher with a lid or plastic wrap. Let steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 16–20 hours. Shorter steep times (12–16 hours) yield lighter flavor; longer (18–24 hours) yields stronger, more extractive concentrate.
- 4
Strain
After steeping, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve lined with a double layer of cheesecloth, a coffee filter, or a nut-milk bag into a clean container. Pour slowly to avoid agitation; if using cheesecloth, let gravity drain then gently press for extra yield (don’t force — can add fines).
- 5
Optional second strain
For a clearer cold brew, strain again through a paper coffee filter set in a fine-mesh sieve. This removes remaining fines and produces a smoother concentrate.
- 6
Store
Transfer the cold brew concentrate to a sealed bottle or jar and refrigerate. It will keep well for up to 10 days; best within 5–7 days for freshest flavor.
