Method

Preparing the Patties

  1. 1

    Form the Patties

Take the ground beef and divide it into two equal portions. Gently form each portion into a ball without overworking the meat.

  2. 2

    Season the Patties

Sprinkle salt and black pepper evenly on both sides of the patties.

Grilling the Onions

  1. 3

    Slice the Onion

Peel and slice the onion into thin rings.

  2. 4

    Cook the Onions

In a skillet over medium heat, add a bit of oil and cook the sliced onions until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 10 minutes. Stir occasionally.

Cooking the Patties

  1. 5

    Heat the Grill or Skillet

Preheat a grill or heavy skillet (preferably cast iron) over medium-high heat.

  2. 6

    Cook the Patties

Place the beef balls on the grill or skillet. Using a spatula, smash each ball down to form a patty. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side.

  3. 7

    Flip the Patties

Flip the patties and place a slice of American cheese on each patty. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted.

Assembling the Burger

  1. 8

    Toast the Buns

If desired, toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster.

  2. 9

    Layer the Ingredients

On the bottom half of each bun, spread a tablespoon of mayonnaise. Place lettuce, the first cheeseburger patty, grilled onions, pickles, the second cheeseburger patty, and finally a slice of tomato on top.

  3. 10

    Top the Burger

Place the top half of the bun on the assembled ingredients.
