Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Slice the medium onion into thin rings. Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden brown and caramelized, about 10-12 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.

  2. 2

    Form the Patties

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Mix gently to avoid overworking the meat. Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, about 1/2 inch thick.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Cook the Patties

In the same skillet used for the onions, add the patties over medium-high heat. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side until brown, then flip them over. Place 1 slice of Swiss cheese and 1 slice of American cheese on each patty. Cover the skillet to help the cheese melt as they cook for another 3-4 minutes.

  2. 4

    Assemble the Patty Melt

Once the patties are cooked and the cheese is melted, remove them from the skillet. On a slice of whole wheat bread, layer the cheesy patty and top it with the caramelized onions. Cover with another slice of bread.

  3. 5

    Grill the Sandwiches

Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in the skillet over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwich in the skillet and grill until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes. Flip the sandwich carefully, adding another tablespoon of butter to the skillet and grill the other side until golden and crispy.

  4. 6

    Serve

Once both sides are toasted, remove the sandwich from the skillet. Cut in half and serve hot. Repeat the process for the second sandwich.
