Onion Rings

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into thick rings, about 1/2 inch thick. Separate the rings and set aside.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well. Gradually whisk in the beer until the batter is smooth and has a thick consistency. Let the batter sit for about 15 minutes.

Frying

  1. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or frying pan, heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it; it should sizzle and float to the top.

  2. 4

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Let any excess batter drip off.

  3. 5

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place a few coated onion rings into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Flip them halfway through for even cooking.

  4. 6

    Drain and Serve

Using a slotted spoon, remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Repeat the frying process with the remaining onion rings.
