Prepare the Ingredients
Gather all the ingredients: slices of hickory smoked ham, American cheese, and sourdough bread.

Butter the Bread
Spread butter on one side of each slice of sourdough bread. Make sure to cover the surface evenly.
Grilling

Assemble the Sandwich
On the unbuttered side of two slices of sourdough bread, layer 2 slices of American cheese, followed by 2 slices of hickory smoked ham, and then add another slice of American cheese on top.

Top the Sandwich
Place the remaining slices of sourdough bread on top of the ham and cheese stack, with the buttered side facing out.

Flip the Sandwich
Carefully flip the sandwich using a spatula. Grill the other side for an additional 3-4 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden brown.
Serving

Slice and Serve
Remove the sandwich from the skillet, let it cool for a minute, then slice in half and serve hot.
