Marinara Sauce

Method

Meatballs

  1. 1

    Prepare the Meat Mixture

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.

  2. 2

    Form the Meatballs

Using your hands, form the mixture into four equal meatballs, each weighing about 3 ounces. Set aside.

Cooking the Marinara Sauce

  1. 3

    Sauté the Aromatics

In a large saucepan over medium heat, add olive oil. Once hot, add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute until fragrant.

  2. 4

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, salt, black pepper, dried oregano, and chopped basil. Allow the sauce to simmer on low heat for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Cooking the Meatballs

  1. 5

    Brown the Meatballs

In a separate skillet over medium-high heat, add a bit of olive oil. Once hot, add the meatballs and brown them on all sides, about 5 minutes.

  2. 6

    Simmer in Marinara

Once browned, transfer the meatballs to the saucepan with the marinara sauce. Cover and let them simmer together for an additional 10-15 minutes until the meatballs are cooked through.

Assembling the Dish

  1. 7

    Prepare for Baking

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a baking dish, place the meatballs with marinara sauce.

  2. 8

    Add Cheese Toppings

Top each meatball with a slice of provolone cheese and sprinkle with grated pecorino romano cheese.

  3. 9

    Bake

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
