Fried Green Tomatoes
Method
Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Tomatoes
Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4 inch thick slices. Sprinkle them with salt on both sides and let them sit for about 10 minutes to draw out excess moisture.
- 2
Set Up Dredging Station
In one bowl, add the buttermilk. In another bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
- 3
Dredge the Tomatoes
Dip each tomato slice into the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge it in the flour-cornmeal mixture, ensuring it is well-coated.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 5
Fry the Tomatoes
Carefully place the coated tomato slices in the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 3-4 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy.
- 6
Drain and Serve
Remove the fried tomatoes from the skillet and drain on paper towels. Serve immediately with roasted corn chow chow and Comeback sauce on the side.
