Chicken & Waffles Ingredients

Method

Cooking Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Chicken

Marinate the chicken breasts in buttermilk for at least 2 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.

  2. 2

    Make the Spice Mix

In a bowl, mix together flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.

  3. 3

    Coat the Chicken

Remove the chicken from buttermilk and coat each piece in the flour mixture. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.

  4. 4

    Fry the Chicken

Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the chicken until golden brown and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.

  5. 5

    Prepare the Grits

In a pot, bring chicken broth or water to a boil. Stir in the grits and reduce heat to low. Cook until thickened, about 20 minutes, then add smoked gouda cheese until melted. Stir well.

  6. 6

    Make the Waffles

Prepare the waffle mix according to package instructions, using water instead of milk if desired. Cook in a preheated waffle iron until golden brown.

  7. 7

    Plate the Dish

Serve the fried chicken on top of the waffles. Drizzle with maple syrup, add a dollop of praline butter, and top with whipped cream. Serve with a side of smoked gouda grits.
