Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Clean the Mussels

Rinse the fresh mussels under cold running water. Scrub the shells with a brush to remove any debris and pull off any beards attached to the mussels. Discard any mussels that are open and do not close when tapped.

Cooking

  1. 2

    Sauté Garlic

In a large pot or deep skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant but not browned.

  2. 3

    Add Spices

Stir in the crushed red pepper flakes and cook for an additional 30 seconds to release their flavor.

  3. 4

    Make the Sauce

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes and add the dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine and bring to a simmer.

  4. 5

    Steam the Mussels

Add the cleaned mussels to the pot, cover, and steam for about 5-7 minutes, or until the mussels have opened. Discard any mussels that remain closed.

  5. 6

    Finish and Serve

Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving. Serve the mussels in bowls with plenty of the spicy marinara sauce.
