Method
For the Mozzarella Sticks
- 1
Prepare the Cheese
Cut the mozzarella cheese into sticks if not pre-cut. Each stick should be about 4 inches long.
- 2
- 3
Bread the Cheese Sticks
Coat each mozzarella stick in flour, shaking off the excess. Dip it into the beaten eggs, then roll it in the breadcrumb mixture until fully coated. Repeat for all sticks.
- 4
Chill the Sticks
Place the breaded mozzarella sticks on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes to help them hold their shape during frying.
- 5
Heat the Oil
In a deep frying pan, heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 6
Fry the Mozzarella Sticks
Carefully add the frozen mozzarella sticks to the hot oil in batches, avoiding overcrowding. Fry for 2-3 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
- 7
Drain and Serve
Remove the mozzarella sticks from the oil and let them drain on paper towels. Serve hot.
For the Marinara Sauce
- 8
- 9
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low.
- 10
Simmer the Sauce
Let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the chopped basil just before serving.
- 11
Serve
Serve the marinara sauce warm alongside the mozzarella sticks.
