Prepare the Coffee Mixture

Brew the Coffee
Brew 1 cup of espresso or strong coffee and let it cool slightly.

Mix Coffee and Liqueur
In a shallow dish, combine the brewed coffee, sugar, and coffee liqueur (if using). Stir until sugar is dissolved.
Make the Mascarpone Mixture

Whisk Egg Yolks
In a medium bowl, whisk the egg yolks with 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar until pale and creamy.

Incorporate Mascarpone
Add the mascarpone cheese and vanilla extract to the egg yolk mixture, whisking until smooth and well combined.

Whip the Cream
In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form.

Fold Cream into Mascarpone
Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until fully incorporated.
Assemble the Tiramisu

Soak Ladyfingers
Dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture briefly (about 1-2 seconds) until just soaked, then layer them in a 9x9 inch dish.

Layer the Mixture
Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the first layer of ladyfingers.

Repeat Layers
Add another layer of soaked ladyfingers followed by the remaining mascarpone mixture.
Chill and Serve

Chill the Tiramisu
Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight for best results.

Before serving, dust the top with cocoa powder and add chocolate shavings if desired.
