Base overnight oats

Optional mix-ins (choose any, add to base before soaking or layer at service)

Method

Prepare base

  1. 1

    Combine dry ingredients

In a jar or airtight container (at least 16-oz capacity), add 1 cup rolled oats, 2 tablespoons chia seeds and a pinch of fine sea salt. If using cinnamon, cocoa powder, or protein powder as a mix-in, add it now and stir briefly to distribute.

  2. 2

    Add liquids and sweetener

Pour 1 cup unsweetened almond milk into the jar, then add 2 teaspoons maple syrup and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Stir thoroughly until the oats and chia seeds are fully moistened and there are no dry pockets. Scrape sides of the jar with a spoon to combine any mix-ins like almond butter.

  3. 3

    Adjust consistency

If you prefer a thinner texture, add an extra 1-3 tablespoons (15-45 ml) almond milk and stir. For thicker oats, leave as-is. The chia seeds will thicken the mixture as it chills.

  4. 4

    Soak overnight

Seal the jar or container with a lid and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, ideally 8–12 hours. During the first hour you can give it another quick stir to prevent clumping, then let it sit undisturbed.

Finish and serve

  1. 5

Remove the jar from the refrigerator. Stir the oats once more to loosen the texture. Taste and adjust sweetness with up to 1 teaspoon additional maple syrup if desired.

  2. 6

Top the oats with 3 ounces of fresh seasonal fruit (daily selection). If using banana, slice and layer on top; for berries or diced fruit, scatter evenly. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon toasted chopped nuts or seeds if desired for crunch.

  3. 7

Serve chilled. Leftovers can be kept refrigerated, covered, for up to 3 days. If storing longer, add fresh fruit only when ready to eat to preserve texture and flavor.
