Method

Prepare espresso

  1. 1

    Heat equipment (optional)

If you prefer the hottest cup, preheat your serving cup by rinsing it with hot water and discarding the rinse.

  2. 2

Pull two shots of espresso (about 2 oz / 60 ml total). Use finely ground coffee and an espresso machine: dose ~18-20 g, tamp evenly, and extract for 25–30 seconds. If using a stovetop espresso maker (moka pot), brew a strong concentrate that yields roughly 2 shots.

Add hot water and finish

  1. 3

Pour approximately 6 oz (about 180 ml) of hot water (just-off-boil, ~90–95°C or 195–205°F) into the preheated serving cup.

  2. 4

Add the freshly pulled two shots of espresso to the hot water. Traditional Americanos are either 'long black' style (espresso poured over hot water) or 'americano' (espresso added to hot water). For a slightly different crema retention, pour espresso over the water; for a milder result, add espresso into the water. Stir gently once to combine.

  3. 5

Taste and, if desired, add sugar/sweetener (start with 1 tsp) or milk/cream (about 2 tbsp). Stir to incorporate. Adjust to taste.

  4. 6

    Serve immediately. Enjoy while hot.
