Method
Dough Preparation
- 1
Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine the warm milk (110°F) and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, and salt.
- 3
- 4
Form the Dough
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 5
First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
Shaping and Baking
- 6
Shape the Dough
After the first rise, punch down the dough and divide it into three equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 12-14 inches long. Braid the ropes together and tuck the ends under.
- 7
Second Rise
Place the braided dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover it with a cloth and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- 8
Prepare the Egg Wash
In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash.
- 9
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- 10
- 11
Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 190°F (88°C).
- 12
Cool and Slice
Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
