Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Mixtures

Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil. Stir until the dough begins to come together.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Bagel Shaping and Boiling

  1. 6

    Shape the Bagels

After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and use your finger to poke a hole through the center to form a bagel shape.

  2. 7

    Second Rise

Place the shaped bagels on a floured surface and cover them with a damp cloth. Let them rest for about 15 minutes.

  3. 8

    Boil the Bagels

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Boil each bagel for about 1-2 minutes on each side, then remove and place on a baking sheet.

Baking and Topping

  1. 9

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. 10

    Add Toppings

If using sesame seeds, sprinkle them over the bagels after boiling. For cinnamon raisin bagels, mix cinnamon and raisins into the dough before shaping.

  3. 11

    Bake

Bake the bagels in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

  4. 12

    Cool and Serve

Remove the bagels from the oven, let them cool on a wire rack, and serve warm or at room temperature.
