Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour and baking powder. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Cream Butter and Sugar

In another bowl, use an electric mixer to cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.

  3. 3

    Add Eggs and Flavorings

Add the eggs one at a time to the butter mixture, mixing well after each addition. Then, stir in the vanilla extract and orange zest.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined. If the dough is too stiff, add the milk to achieve a smooth consistency.

  5. 5

    Chill Dough

Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up.

Shaping and Baking

  1. 6

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 7

    Shape Koulourakia

Take portions of the chilled dough and roll them into thin ropes, about 6 inches long. Twist each rope into a figure-eight shape or braid them as desired.

  3. 8

    Prepare Topping

In a small bowl, whisk the egg yolk with a teaspoon of water to create an egg wash. Brush the tops of each shaped koulourakia with the egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds on top.

  4. 9

    Bake

Place the shaped koulourakia on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

  5. 10

    Cool and Serve

Remove from the oven and let the koulourakia cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before serving.
