For the Orange Syrup

Method

Making the Orange Syrup

  1. 1

    Prepare the Syrup

In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup of granulated sugar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar completely dissolves.

  2. 2

    Add Orange Flavor

Add 1 cup of fresh orange juice and 1 tablespoon of orange zest to the saucepan. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil and then reduce the heat, letting it simmer for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.

Preparing the Cake

  1. 3

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 4

    Prepare Phyllo Pastry

Melt 1 cup of unsalted butter in a pan. Lay out one sheet of phyllo pastry on a clean surface, brush with melted butter, and repeat with 5 more sheets, layering them on top of each other.

  3. 5

    Combine Cake Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 1 cup of granulated sugar, 4 large eggs, 1 cup of plain yogurt, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until well combined.

  4. 6

    Assemble the Cake

Crumble the layered phyllo pastry and fold it into the egg and yogurt mixture. Mix until fully incorporated.

  5. 7

    Bake the Cake

Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and spread evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

  6. 8

    Soak with Syrup

Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and immediately pour the cooled orange syrup over the hot cake. Allow it to soak for at least 1 hour before serving.
