Method
Pita Bread Preparation
- 1
Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
Mix Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a dough begins to form.
- 3
Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- 4
First Rise
Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- 5
Shape the Pitas
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten to about 1/4 inch thick.
- 6
Second Rise
Cover the flattened dough with a cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
- 7
Cook the Pitas
Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). Place the pitas on a baking sheet and bake for about 5-7 minutes, or until they puff up and are lightly golden.
- 8
Cool the Pitas
Remove from oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
