Onion Strings

Method

Preparation of Onion Strings

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the onions and slice them thinly into rings, about 1/8 inch thick. Separate the rings and place them in a large bowl.

  2. 2

    Soak in Buttermilk

Pour the buttermilk over the sliced onions, making sure they are fully submerged. Allow them to soak for at least 30 minutes to tenderize.

  3. 3

    Make the Coating

In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper to create the coating.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep skillet or deep fryer over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Dredge the Onion Rings

Remove the onion rings from the buttermilk and let the excess liquid drip off. Dredge the onion rings in the flour mixture until evenly coated.

  6. 6

    Fry the Onion Strings

Carefully place a few coated onion rings into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

  7. 7

    Drain the Oil

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried onion strings and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

  8. 8

    Fry Remaining Onion Strings

Repeat the frying process with the remaining onion rings until all are cooked.

  9. 9

    Serve

Serve the onion strings warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
