Method
Preparing the Bread Pudding
- 1
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- 2
Prepare the Bread
Cube the French bread into bite-sized pieces and place them in a large mixing bowl.
- 3
Mix Wet Ingredients
In another bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- 4
Combine Ingredients
Pour the wet mixture over the cubed bread. Gently fold the mixture together until the bread is well coated. Let it sit for about 15 minutes to absorb the liquid.
- 5
Transfer to Baking Dish
Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Pour the bread pudding mixture into the prepared dish, spreading it evenly.
- 6
Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
Preparing the Banana Foster Topping
- 7
Melt Butter
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter.
- 8
Add Sugar and Bananas
Once the butter is melted, add the brown sugar and stir until dissolved. Add the sliced bananas and cook for about 2-3 minutes, until they are soft.
- 9
Flambé with Rum
Carefully add the dark rum to the skillet. If desired, use a long lighter to flambé the mixture until the flames subside, about 30 seconds.
- 10
Finish the Sauce
Stir in the ground cinnamon and vanilla extract, mixing well to combine all ingredients.
Serving
- 11
Serve Warm
Once the bread pudding is baked, remove it from the oven and let it cool slightly. Serve warm with the banana foster topping drizzled over each serving.
