Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Wash and peel the russet potatoes. Grate them using a box grater or food processor, then place the grated potatoes in a bowl of cold water to remove excess starch. Let them soak for about 10 minutes.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Onion

Peel and finely chop the onion. Set aside.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Drain and Dry

After soaking, drain the grated potatoes and rinse them under cold water. Spread them on a clean kitchen towel and pat them dry to remove as much moisture as possible.

  2. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large skillet, heat 1 cup of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until shimmering.

  3. 5

    Cook the Hash Browns

Add the grated potatoes evenly in the skillet. Press them down slightly with a spatula. Sprinkle the chopped onion on top and season with salt and black pepper. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the bottom is golden brown.

  4. 6

    Flip the Hash Browns

Using a large plate, carefully flip the hash browns over. Add butter to the skillet and let it melt. Slide the hash browns back into the skillet and cook for another 5-7 minutes until golden brown on the other side.

  5. 7

    Serve

Once both sides are crispy and golden, remove the hash browns from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve hot.
