Instructions

  1. 1

    Make the Dough

In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the egg and water until a dough forms. Knead gently on a floured surface for about 5 minutes. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Filling

In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the onion, garlic, and bell pepper until soft. Add the ground beef or chicken and cook until browned. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and mix in cilantro.

  3. 3

    Assemble the Empanadas

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thick. Cut into circles (about 5 inches in diameter). Place a spoonful of filling (beef, chicken, or pizza sauce with mozzarella) or guava and cream cheese in the center of each circle. Fold over and seal the edges with a fork.

  4. 4

    Bake the Empanadas

Place the filled empanadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush with egg wash (beaten egg with a splash of water) for a golden finish. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
