Method

Preparation Steps

  1. 1

    Prepare the Sushi Rice

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rice and water in a rice cooker and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once cooked, let it cool slightly.

  2. 2

    Season the Rice

In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Gently fold this mixture into the warm sushi rice. Set aside to cool further.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Fillings

Slice the cucumber and avocado into thin strips. If using crab meat, shred it into smaller pieces.

  4. 4

    Assemble the Maki

Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface. Lay a sheet of nori on the mat, shiny side down. With wet hands, spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge.

  5. 5

    Add Fillings

Arrange a few strips of cucumber, avocado, and crab meat horizontally along the center of the rice-covered nori.

  6. 6

    Roll the Maki

Using the bamboo mat, carefully roll the nori away from you, applying gentle pressure to form a tight cylinder. Wet the top edge of the nori to seal the roll.

  7. 7

    Slice and Serve

Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into bite-sized pieces. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
