Preparation

  1. 1

    Gather Your Ingredients

Collect all the ingredients needed for the grilled cheese sandwich: 2 slices of bread, 1 cup of cheddar cheese, 1 slice of American cheese, and 2 tablespoons of butter.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Cheese

Grate the cheddar cheese if it's not pre-grated, and set aside. You will combine it with the American cheese once the sandwich is being assembled.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Butter the Bread

Spread 1 tablespoon of butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread. This will be the outside of the sandwich that will get crispy when grilled.

  2. 4

    Assemble the Sandwich

Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, on a clean cutting board. Layer the grated cheddar cheese and the slice of American cheese on top of the bread. Then, place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side up.

  3. 5

    Grill the Sandwich

Heat a skillet over medium heat. Once hot, place the sandwich in the skillet. Grill for about 3-4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Carefully flip the sandwich using a spatula.

  4. 6

    Finish Grilling

Grill the other side for another 3-4 minutes until it is also golden brown and the cheese has melted. You can cover the skillet with a lid to help the cheese melt faster.

  5. 7

    Serve

Once both sides are golden brown and the cheese is melted, remove the sandwich from the skillet. Let it cool for a minute, then cut it in half and serve warm.
