Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Okra
Wash the fresh okra under cold running water. Trim the ends and cut them into 1/2-inch thick slices.
- 2
Prepare the Batter
In a mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Mix well until fully blended.
- 3
Prepare the Buttermilk
Pour the buttermilk into a shallow dish, ready for dipping the okra slices.
Cooking
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can check the temperature with a thermometer.
- 5
Coat the Okra
Dip each okra slice into the buttermilk, ensuring it is fully coated, then transfer it to the cornmeal mixture. Coat thoroughly, pressing the mixture onto the okra to ensure it sticks.
- 6
Fry the Okra
Carefully add the coated okra slices to the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking.
- 7
Drain and Serve
Once fried, use a slotted spoon to remove the okra from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Season with additional salt if desired. Serve hot.
