Pasta

Topping (optional)

Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the pasta

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add 2 cups of macaroni pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 7-8 minutes.

  2. 2

    Drain the pasta

Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside. Do not rinse.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 3

    Melt the butter

In the same pot over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter.

  2. 4

    Add flour

Stir in 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes until bubbly and golden.

  3. 5

    Add milk

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.

  4. 6

    Add cheese and seasonings

Remove from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of mustard powder until smooth.

Combining and Baking

  1. 7

    Combine pasta and cheese sauce

Fold the drained macaroni into the cheese sauce until well-coated.

  2. 8

    Prepare for baking

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). If desired, transfer the mac and cheese to a greased baking dish.

  3. 9

    Add topping

In a small bowl, mix together 0.5 cups of breadcrumbs, 0.5 cups of grated Parmesan cheese, and 1 teaspoon of paprika. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the mac and cheese.

  4. 10

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until the topping is golden and crispy.
