Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

Method

Cake Layers

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.

  4. 4

    Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures

Gradually add the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  5. 5

    Add Boiling Water

Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth (the batter will be thin).

  6. 6

    Bake the Cakes

Evenly distribute the batter among the three prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Cakes

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

  1. 8

    Beat the Butter

In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.

  2. 9

    Add Cocoa and Sugar

Gradually add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with the milk, mixing until smooth and fluffy.

  3. 10

    Add Vanilla

Stir in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.

Assemble the Cake

  1. 11

    Layer the Cakes

Place one layer of cake on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of chocolate frosting on top.

  2. 12

    Repeat Layers

Add the second layer of cake and repeat the frosting process. Top with the third layer of cake.

  3. 13

    Frost the Top and Sides

Use the remaining frosting to cover the top and sides of the cake.

  4. 14

    Add Toppings

Drizzle the chocolate sauce over the top and sprinkle with dark chocolate shavings.
